How to Recognize and Develop Your Strongest Skills

Sometimes, we miss a lot of life-changing opportunities because we don’t think we have the skills required to make the best out of them.

We miss out on many chances to make it big in our career or in life in general because of our inferiority complex.

We back out even before we start something, believing we have no capability to play the role and excel in doing so.

As a career blogger and someone who has been working from home for over eight years now, I have come across countless remote job seekers complaining about not knowing what to do and having no expertise at all.

Before I got into my remote job, I never thought I could use my researching skills to earn money.

After eight years, I’m fully convinced that there are hundreds (if not thousands) of skills that have huge income potential.

Before you get into the funnel of looking for jobs, it’s essential that you recognize your existing skill set and make sure that you take the time to refine those, just like what I did.

Here are some of the tips I followed that helped me pinpoint the skills I’m strongest at.

Focus On Something You Do Best

Are you good in art? Do you enjoy direct sales? Do your friends turn to you for life or money advice? Create a list of similar questions and answer them one by one. This will be your starting point.

It does not matter whether you are only good at managing your own time, organizing your home or teaching your kids. These are all qualities that you can develop into a money-making hustle.

What I did was to take a step back and I focused on what I do best in my daily life. By eliminating tasks that I don’t enjoy doing, I was able to list down a few skills that I was determined to focus on.

Nothing Is Worthless

Like I said, there a lot of skills that people can capitalize on. But, the level of complexity and the value of each skill differs. I’ve heard a lot of people say ‘my skill is not valuable, I can’t rely on it.’

But I refuse to agree. Nothing is really worthless if you know how to use your skills to your advantage.

If you are someone who is looking for work, then the first thing you need to do is to stop ignoring the essential qualities you already have that fit the kind of jobs you’re applying for.

Once you get hired, you can start developing your skills, just like I did. I initially thought that I only have research skills, but as I was doing my job, I also discovered that I’m also good in writing blogs and relating with readers so I decided to capitalize on those skills.

Work On The Right Skill

The right skills don’t always mean that they are the most profitable ones. But they can be right in the sense that you loved those skills and the work that relate to them.

So, you need to balance the money-making possibilities of a certain skill and compare it with the fulfillment that you’ll get when you master that skill even if you understand that you won’t get too much money for it.

Remember: your passion should drive your growth, not the income potential. Money is only a byproduct of your passion.

Invest In Learning

There is only so much you can learn through free resources. Once you know where your interest lies, you need to invest in honing skills that fall under that interest of yours.

I firmly believe that it’s necessary to invest time and money in improving a certain skill or learning a new one.

Personally, I have purchased multiple online courses that have given me a lot of insights into the different aspects of the blogging business before I launched my own blog.

In my opinion, there will always be a learning curve in every hustle or business. So, be ready to invest in learning as it takes more than just physical but also emotional and mental strength.

Believe In Yourself

This, for me, is the most important rule. To be successful in any business or hustle, first you need to believe in yourself. If you lack the confidence to achieve your intended goals, then no matter how much time you spend in recognizing your skills, it’s not going to help.

Everyone starts this journey at some point, and no one is an accomplished individual from the start. You learn through the journey and you become successful as you repeat a certain process consistently.

We all have innate qualities or skills which we usually overlook. To become successful in pursuing our passion or dream career, we must first find out what we are good at and work hard in developing that skill. The rest will certainly follow.
